A special discussion on the future plans of the Palmyrah Development Board, which functions under the Ministry of Plantation and Community Infrastructure Facilities, as well as the development and promotion of palmyrah-based products, was held today (23.06.2026) at the Parliament Complex.
The meeting was chaired by Minister of Plantation and Community Infrastructure Facilities Samantha Vidyarathna and Deputy Minister Sundaralingam Pradeep.
The discussion was attended by Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Ramalingam Chandrasekar, Member of Parliament Ilangumaran, and other government officials.
During the meeting, extensive discussions were held on the sustainable utilization of palmyrah resources, improving the quality and value addition of palmyrah-based products, expanding domestic and international market opportunities, and encouraging entrepreneurship within the palmyrah sector.
Participants also exchanged views on the future development strategies of the Palmyrah Development Board and explored measures to strengthen the palmyrah industry as a significant contributor to the national economy and rural livelihoods.
The Chairman of the Palmyrah Development Board, along with several senior officials, also participated in the discussion.
Under the theme “Katpahatharu Virutcham – The Tree That Brings Prosperity to the Nation,” the meeting reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing the palmyrah sector and maximizing its contribution to economic growth, employment generation, and sustainable community development across the country.
