“The Tree that Brings Prosperity to the Nation” – The Wealth of the Palmyrah Tree

The 15th Katpaham Sales Outlet of the Palmyrah Development Board, operating under the Ministry of Plantation and Community Infrastructure, was ceremonially opened today (24 June 2026) at the Co-operative Rural Bank Building, Abaya Mawatha, New Town, Kataragama.

The outlet was officially declared open by Deputy Minister Sundaralingam Pradeep, who attended the event as the Chief Guest and formally handed over the facility for public use.

Established to provide the public with a wide range of palmyrah-based food products, traditional handicrafts, and environmentally friendly palmyrah products under one roof, the new sales outlet is expected to further expand the market reach of palmyrah products in Monaragala and the surrounding areas. It will also create new marketing opportunities for producers and artisans engaged in the palmyrah industry.

The event was attended by the Chairman, Vice Chairman, and members of the Kataragama Pradeshiya Sabha, along with several distinguished guests. Also present were Mr. R.Raveenthiran, Chairman of the Palmyrah Development Board; Mr. S.Srivijendran, Deputy General Manager; and Mr. Geeth Wahalathanthri, Marketing Manager, together with other officials of the Board.

The opening of this 15th Katpaham Sales Outlet marks another significant milestone in the Palmyrah Development Board’s ongoing efforts to transform palmyrah resources into a driving force for economic development and rural empowerment.

Guided by the theme “The Wealth of the Karpaha Tree – The Tree that Brings Prosperity to the Nation,” the Palmyrah Development Board continues its dedicated mission of promoting palmyrah-based products at the national level while preserving and showcasing Sri Lanka’s rich palmyrah heritage. 🌴
